Austin State Hospital Mission:

Partnering to find solutions toward wellness.

Austin State Hospital (ASH) continues a long tradition of providing quality mental health services to the citizens of the State of Texas. From a single hospital on the outskirts of the Capital City to a large urban facility on the cutting edge of change, ASH continues to be a recognized leader in the provision of psychiatric care to the community and the state.

Types of Care

The Austin State Hospital provides care through three large service units:

Child and Adolescent Services

Child and adolescent programs offer services to children from ages 3-12 years and include a latency unit (up to age 12 years), an adolescent girls unit and an adolescent boys unit.

Adult Services Program

The adult services program consists of five admission units, two intermediate care units, and one forensic unit. Specialty adult programs are offered for older adults, longer-term cognitive behavioral and multiple disabilities patients, deaf adults, and patients in need of longer-term behavioral stabilization.

Clinical Specialties

We evaluate and treat psychiatric illness and our services include nursing, social work, psychology, rehabilitation, education, nutrition, and spiritual care. In addition, we provide patients with basic health care such as medical and dental check-ups, x-rays, and laboratory work.

Accreditation

Services are paid for through general revenue funds from the State of Texas, private payment, private third party insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.  ASH has been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) since 1957. JCAHO is an independent organization which evaluates and reports on health care organizations’ ability to provide safe, high quality patient care.

The Family House

The Family House, located on the Austin State Hospital campus, accommodates up to four families of patients receiving services at the hospital. The Family House supports the mission of the hospital by allowing consumers and their families to actively work on treatment and discharge plans, allowing for earlier release times and higher success rates.

Operated through the Client Rights Office, The Family House operates 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Access to the Family House during hours other than 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. is prearranged through Security at the ASH switchboard.
